Six years on, Ford leads a jet set lifestyle, forever flying from Milan to Paris (his adopted home) to New York and back again. He refuses to pack anything other than cabin luggage
Christian Louboutin says his business grew by double digits in 2009, which was generally a horrible year for anyone trying to sell an item of luxury apparel. He tells the new issue of Vanity Fair that he owes a lot of his sales (340,000 pairs of Shoes a year) to Danielle Steel, who is said to have 6,000 pairs of the shoes.
“She comes to Paris,Sale Christian Louboutin, and she literally buys everything. Then she flies back to New York, says, ‘I’m a little disappointed ― there’s nothing in the store,Christian Louboutin Boots,’ and walks out with 80 pairs,” he grinned. “She is super.s not like she needs those soles for everyone to know how rich she is.
(claiming to need only three pieces of clothing a suit,Christian Louboutin Evening, a shirt and a coat, all in navy or black), so as not to waste valuable time at baggage reclaim.
He is addicted to Coca-Cola and chocolate (“the cheaper the better. Hershey’s anything”). He never shaves, but uses a beard trimmer to cut his hair “number five on top and four for around the sides and for my beard”. Despite his perfectly groomed appearance, he does not have a beauty regime, apart from a supply of Kiehl’s moisturiser and hair gel: “I wash my face a lot and look for wrinkles. I think rest, sleep and the right food are the best ways to look good.” He is also a perfume freak. “It’s like aromatherapy for me. When I go to bed, I put it on my wrist so I can smell it on myself.” In his Paris apartment, he has a bathroom full of the stuff “Comme, Issey, christian louboutin, Penhaligon’s” and he sometimes puts on two or three at a time.
Ford doesn’t have time to see a therapist or to work out at a gym but says that stress burns calories. His teenage years were spent in New York, dancing the nights away at Studio 54 where ***e was chic, and Aids unheard-of. Now when he goes to nightclubs, he goes to observe, to get ideas, and, christian heels, he hopes, to come home in the early hours with a rough sketch in his pocket.
He is, in short, a thoroughly modern man, living a thoroughly modern life. And that, if you have the money, is what the new Christian Louboutin is all about.
It is two days after the Christian Louboutin menswear show for autumn/winter ‘96 and Ford has a few hours in Milan before setting off for a long weekend in Paris. It is difficult to be squeezed into the Tom Ford schedule, mainly because it is filled up six months in advance, but now I sit across from him in the offices above the Christian Louboutin store on Via Monte Napoleone. Ford is slim, dark-haired and stubble-chinned. He has an approachable, open manner surprising, considering he has been elevated to the highest pedestal in the hyped-up fashion business for transforming Christian Louboutin from purveyor of Eighties loafers to the funkiest label around. Ford’s input has helped increase sales at Christian Louboutin by 90 per cent in the past year, with sales of Ford’s ready-to-wear collection up by 40 per cent.
